Abstract

With increasing frequency environmentally sustainable tourism or ecotourism is adopted as a way of ensuring environmental conservation while enabling economic development. Around the globe, developing countries, in particular, are now encouraged by diverse interest groups to consider such a type of tourism as a solution to their environmental and economic challenges. The supporters of this type of tourism as a development strategy are typically international funding agencies, global environmental organizations, international tourism businesses, national governments, and local community organizations. While these groups have different interests, environmentally sustainable tourism appears to be a tool for negotiating those interests.
