Abstract

This article aims to describe the experience of nine gay men in Cali-Colombia in the processes of revealing their sexual orientation to their families. It had a qualitative approach and narrative topics design. The findings show that revelation usually occurs in adolescence, where peers, siblings and partners are considered an important resource. In addition, binary gender beliefs, imaginaries about traditional masculinity, religious beliefs and society were considered barriers to revelation. It is concluded that the experience of revelation of each child is unique given the personal, family, and social aspects of their history, acknowledging family social support as an essential aspect. Finally, it is recommended to build intervention strategies aimed to strengthening family communication and family social support.
