Abstract
As part of the Children's Care and Justice Bill Scotland is preparing to end the practice of housing children in young offender institutions (YOIs). In this report Dr Ruby Whitelaw and Ross Gibson compare the needs and experiences of children in the secure care population with those of children housed in YOIs. With the likes of the Secure Care Pathway and Standards already in place, the authors make the case that secure care is better placed to provide the therapeutic support that these children require in order to achieve better outcomes.
