Abstract
The delivery of reliable electrical services in remote locations around the world face sustainability challenges in techno-economic and social aspects of planning, design and operation for private, community-based organisations as well as local and national governments. This study aims to increase the positive social and economic impact of renewable energy mini-grids through addressing their sustainability challenges by evaluating seven existing islanded mini-grids in Scotland. The purpose of the study is to inform mini-grid asset management strategies and frameworks, identify opportunities to reduce the management burden on local communities, propose a pathway towards long term financial viability for the mini-girds, and capture operational lessons learned for sharing with other mini-grid organisations internationally.
