Abstract

Protected area managers have made significant improvements in environmental protection. More recently, managers have explored the need to include human dimensions in land management. This title links the two with an extensive review of contemporary protected area land management in Europe and illustrates a variety of measures for potential regional development. The authors suggest that a new paradigm is needed for Europe, one that links conservation and regional development. The history is based on the practice to first save the land, next integrate as part of an ecosystem and finally link landscapes for regional development. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is introduced as one model of land use classification that could be used to zone lands for protection. Further, since the IUCN acknowledges the human dimensions of land management, the protection and conservation of biodiversity is matched with natural and cultural resources of the region.
