Abstract

This Research Talk on recent developments in the area of Open Access (including the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic) addresses the current state of the Scholarly Communications landscape. With an initial focus on Europe and the United Kingdom, where the European Commission Open Access policy for works resulting from EU-funded projects worldwide has provided a benchmark for national and institutional Open Access policies elsewhere, the presentation will examine the main Open Access flavours (Green, Gold and Diamond OA) and recent developments in the area such as the so-called Plan S issued by a coalition of European public research funders to achieve full Open Access by Jan 1st, 2021. Open Access is often evolving in a region-specific fashion these days, mostly depending on the economic models behind local implementations and policies. Initiatives like the LIBSENSE and the African Journals Online (AJOL) in Africa and the SciELO model in Latin America will be briefly introduced as examples for alternative models for OA beyond the European approach.
