Abstract
This essay brings together animal studies and ecocritical approaches to Shakespeare's Richard II and uses the deposed monarch's imagined encounter with his horse 'roan Barbary' to suggest that at the end more is available to the reader than a sense of a fallen world of instrumentalised use value.
