The 2006 Energy Review restated two major long-term energy challenges to tackle climate change while delivering secure, clean energy at affordable prices. Ambitious targets have been set to reduce CO2 production by 60 per cent by 2050 and to increase renewable energy production to meet 20 per cent of the UK demand for electricity by 2020, with some aspiring regional targets significantly higher than this. It is implicit that security of electricity supply must be maintained in a portfolio of measures that includes demand reduction, increased renewable production, and best use of the future fleet of centralized and distributed generation.
