Abstract

OCLC and euroCRIS recently put out a worldwide survey to draw an up-to-date map of Current Research Information System (CRIS) implementation and Research Information Management (RIM) practice worldwide. With 381 responses collected from 44 different countries, this has been the largest survey of its kind carried out thus far. Three countries provided the largest number of responses with 39 each: the United Kingdom, the United States and Peru. The presentation will examine some of the main findings arising from this survey, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1218067, with a specific insight on regional results and practices in areas like drivers for CRIS and RIM practice adoption, uptake of technical features and standards or system interoperability with other institutional platforms. The main goal of this survey was actually to examine the increasing involvement of research libraries in RIM practices, so responses were mainly received from research-performing organisations with a research library, i.e. universities. National and regional CRIS systems are frequently not managed by libraries, so they were underepresented in the collected sample. The presentation will draw on the extensive knowledge that euroCRIS has of these systems to examine their current implementation -- mostly in Europe -- and features. Building on a few case studies, it will be argued that while system interoperability and content aggregation have so far been most successful in the area of Open Access repositories, momentum is gathering for the additional harvesting of these CRIS systems, allowing a far richer contextual metadata information to be added to the currently existing aggregated content.
