Abstract

This chapter provides a detailed description of using network coding in cooperative relay networks as well as a practical network spread coding scheme for cooperative communications in multipath fading channels. The concept of Network coding (NC), however, differs from simple network routing due to the fact that NC aims at whole network optimization rather than individual classes of users or applications being the objective. NC has been rapidly growing into a potentially powerful tool in the design of communication networks. NC comes with a great flexibility to be combined with cooperative relaying strategies for superior performance enhancement in many unstructured and complex networks such as multi-hop relay and mesh networks that make extensive use of multipath diversity. The chapter provides an overview of some commonly used cooperation strategies and their performance for high and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions.
