Abstract

This paper estimates the impact, measured in terms of sectoral output, of domestic forestry activity on the economies of the UK and its constituent countries. Key data sources were the UK input-output tables for 1984 and a purpose-specific survey of the forestry and timber processing sectors. A modified input-output model was developed to measure forestry's backward and forward linkage impact, incorporating the concept of critical supply-dependency among certain timber-using sectors. A Leontief intranational model was constructed to distribute estimated UK forestry impact among its member countries (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland).
