Abstract

This report summarises insights from a national webinar exploring how NHS green and blue spaces can be used more effectively to deliver health, environmental and economic co-benefits. The webinar was held on 25 th February 2026 and a variety of NHS staffing groups attended, including Scottish government and sustainability leads. Over 80 members of staff joined the webinar, which was convened in recognition of the scale and potential of the NHS outdoor estate. NHS Scotland manages approximately 1,572 hectares of outdoor space, one of the largest public estates in Europe, representing a significant and largely underutilised asset with real potential to support prevention, recovery, climate resilience and community wellbeing. The webinar combined presentations and facilitated discussions to share emerging practice and practical delivery experience from across the sector. The webinar was organised by Public Health Scotland with support from Nature Scot, Scottish Government and Design HOPES.
