Abstract

Who we are: Waterways is a Scotland-based art-science collective following salmon and their migrations into local landscapes, distant seascapes, multi-species histories and possible futures. We are oceanographers, biologists, artists, writers and composers fostering interdisciplinary approaches to conservation. What we do: We have an annual cycle of field research, collaborative writing, art-making, performance and community engagement. We travel with the salmon physically and imaginatively, integrating ecology, observation and creative practice. We ask, how do we think about migration in changing oceans? We aim to establish a travelling arts festival and interdisciplinary network. Cromarty residency, June 2025: Seaport and former fishing community. Marine entry for salmon navigating heavily damned and managed river system. Netting for zooplankton at base of salmon post-smolt food web. Open-house event with zine making, microscopes, marine research visuals, film, art, poetry and onbeach performance of co-written script
