Abstract
The seakeeping behaviour of damaged ships remains an area where many aspects of motion dynamics are not yet fully understood. This study investigates the six degrees-of-freedom (6-DOF) motion characteristics of a damaged KVLCC2 hull advancing at a constant forward speed under regular wave conditions using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Particular attention is given to identifying which motion components exhibit the most significant differences between intact and damaged conditions, as well as how damage alters the resonance characteristics across the full 6-DOF response. A soft-mooring system was incorporated to enable direct comparison of motion Response Amplitude Operators (RAOs) between the two conditions. Simulations were conducted for two wave heading conditions — stern quartering sea and beam sea — with various systematically varied wave steepness values. Numerical reliability was established through grid-convergence and time-step sensitivity studies, with validation against experimental RAO data. The findings contribute to a better understanding of damaged ship seakeeping, offering insights for navigational decision-making and damage stability assessment.
