Abstract

This chapter provides a brief history of the scope of the field of vocational behaviour and the disciplines that study this area, and considers some of the contemporary challenges and effects of global disruptions on work and work-related decisions. We review the aims for the overall Research Handbook on Vocational Behaviour, which included the goals of integrating perspectives across disciplines and fields of study, examining the broader ecology of work and life, embracing diverse epistemologies and methodologies, advancing a social justice agenda, and acknowledging disruption and complexity in working life. We reflect on how the chapters contribute to our knowledge base across three areas - theory, methodology, and reactions to global disruptions – and finish with our own visions for the future of research in vocational behaviour.
