Abstract
Existing research has suggested that Chinese international students (CISs) studying in the UK encounter a range of challenges, including acculturation difficulties and changes in their social networks, which may contribute to feelings of loneliness. The purpose of this study is to explore how CISs experience and cope with loneliness. A qualitative study using individual semi-structured interviews with CISs (N=15) was conducted, incorporating image elicitation to engage participants and allow them a means to share their experiences. An in-depth, inductive thematic analysis approach was used. Four main themes were developed: (1) Making Sense of Feelings of Withdrawal, Isolation, and Disconnection; (2) Difficulties in Developing Authentic Relationships and Communicating Interculturally, including the sub-theme ‘Disengaged from the Academic Community’; (3) Withholding Feelings; and (4) Self-Reliant, Problem-Focused Coping. The study highlights the essential need for HE institutions to adopt a culturally sensitive approach to recognising and addressing the diverse experiences of loneliness among CISs.
