Abstract

Identity can be both diverse and fluid for people who have a criminal conviction, with a positive change in identity being a key factor in reducing likelihood of reoffending. Professionals who work in correctional institutions aim to induce changes in individuals, by identifying their current perspective and effecting the development of a positive identity. This includes those who have developed a criminal identity, often as the result of difficult social and family backgrounds and those who have low-self efficacy due to poor education and low skills. The experience of incarceration is a further challenge, given the general nature of the environment and sometimes sudden and profound effect that this may have on a person’s state of mind. This paper describes the challenges that these considerations present, the potential opportunities for targeted use of technology, and challenges for design.
