Abstract

A range of guidance on how to conduct ethical mental health research already exists. The purpose of this specific briefing is to highlight young men’s reflections on different aspects of the research process and research methods for carrying out mental health research. It is intended to provide a quick reference guide to other researchers, or others, who wish to engage with young men. It is not intended to provide an exhaustive overview of all possible mental health research approaches, methods and ethical considerations, nor provide an indepth reflection on the coproduction approach. The findings in this briefing are drawn from the recorded discussions in the YPF sessions, including young men’s opinions of the different methods they tried, and their reflections on their own active involvement with the research activities, such as data collection and analysis. The briefing also draws on the perspectives of the young men who participated in the peer research focus groups, interview and surveys.
