Abstract

Sexual minority identity measurement research historically focuses on negative aspects such as internalized prejudice. More recent literature adopts an asset-oriented view by developing models of positive identity. A commonly used self-report survey quantifying sexual minority identity is the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Positive Identity Measure (LGB-PIM). Despite its use, the LGB-PIM lacks thorough psychometric assessment in non-American samples and any examination of measurement invariance. The present study reports results from a cross-national cross-sectional online survey of sexual minority health and well-being. Participants (N = 748) were sexual minority adults residing in the United States or United Kingdom. Results yielded the following primary findings. First, the LGB-PIM five-factor structure (i.e. Self-awareness, Authenticity, Community, Intimacy, and Social Justice) fit the data well, with internal consistency values ranging from acceptable to excellent. Second, significant, yet small, negative correlations for four out of the five subscales in the American sample and three out of five subscales in the United Kingdom sample showed evidence for convergent validity. Third, measurement invariance analyses showed the LGB-PIM functioned equivalently by country sample. Implications for use of the LGB-PIM in future research are discussed.
