Abstract

The Clan Campbell rightly hold a position of prominence when considering the history of the West Highlands. Their power and influence has permeated and significantly influenced community, culture and Highland politics for over 500 years. From a handful of progenitors in the thirteenth century the clan grew to become numerically significant. The headship of the clan was held by the Campbells of Argyll, and by the middle of the fifteenth the Glenorchy/Breadalbane line had been established. The Campbells perhaps have the largest number of cadet families of any clan in Scotland. This article focuses on new research into the Campbells of Glenorchy through the use of Y-chromosome DNA. It confirms that the Campbells of Glenorchy are not related in the male line to the Campbells of Argyll. The research is ongoing, and will likely take some time to develop solid conclusions on the earlier history of the Glenorchy lineage. However, several suggestions are proposed, and we would welcome discussion and comment from the membership and others with an interest.
