Abstract

The cybersecurity domain presents challenges to lay citizens. Explanations and/or advice related to wise behaviours in digital environments is considered essential. Cybersecurity knowledge and information discipline constantly evolves in what is a complex information ecosystem. Perhaps predictably, there are multiple potential sources of advice with a lack of mutual agreement on best practice. Moreover, advice is seldom tailored to accommodate different levels of competence and resource availability. This situation demands attention as a domain of critical importance for the digital resilience of lay users. In this paper, we explore some of the specific features/characteristics of cybersecurity advice using an information of potentiality lens. Without sufficient attention to change the status quo, lay users will either not be able to identify and/or follow best practice advice or follow suboptimal or outdated advice risking triggering adverse cybersecurity incidents. This initial foray is meant to propose a way of improving the quality of the best practice advice in the cybersecurity domain and, as a consequence, to develop greater user resilience and an optimal user experience.
