Abstract
This report is an output from a three-year study (2022-5) by a research team at the University of Strathclyde, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), under its Transforming Working Lives Programme. It is titled ‘Amplifying Employee Voice and Hearing the Unheard: A Multidisciplinary Study of Contemporary Working Lives in De-industrialised Communities’. Its underlying premise is that access to good work can reduce inequality and poverty and improve working lives, and that effective voice is central to good work and to creating a fairer society. The project is generating robust data that will answer key questions, principally on the extent to which, and how, workers in different sectors and work settings are involved, how they experience involvement (or its absence) and are able to influence decisions that matter most to them. Analysis of evidence should enable government, policy makers, employers and trade unions to devise policies and adopt measures that can amplify voice for the benefit of workers, organisations and the wider society. The Inverclyde Local Authority in west central Scotland, an area greatly impacted by de-industrialisation with characteristics of a disadvantaged region, was selected for study. At project’s start the government’s ‘levelling-up’ declaration affirmed the salience of Inverclyde as locus. Another significant contextual factor is the Scottish Government’s Fair Work Framework and its advisory Fair Work Convention.
