Abstract

As Great Britain integrates more offshore wind energy and point-to-point links, High Voltage DC (HVDC) systems will be essential for connecting offshore generation. These HVDC networks must be planned and operated alongside the existing High Voltage AC grid. This study presents a mathematical formulation of a Security-Constrained Optimal Power Flow (SCOPF) for coordinated ACDC dispatch. The SCOPF uses Bender’s Decomposition to handle the complex ACDC optimal power flow and contingencies. The model accommodates both point-to-point HVDC links and multi-terminal HVDC grids, considering linear and non-linear power flow formulations. Its effectiveness is demonstrated on extended IEEE test cases, with AC networks ranging from 6 to 57 buses with HVDC networks from 1 to 9 terminals.
