Abstract

Compared to large-scale PV power plants, rooftop-mounted home PV systems have the advantages of not occupying land, reducing the need for long-distance power transmission, and the presence of roof tilting angles that reduce the cost of PV panel mounts. However, due to the limitation of roof orientation and area, further development of home PV systems will explore various combinations of PV panel orientations. In this paper, based on average roof size data and tilt angle data for UK dwellings, combined with 12 months of optical radiation data from the Nottingham, UK area, PLECS simulation software was used to test the amount of power conversion that could be generated by a domestic rooftop PV system with different combinations of orientations (South+East, South+West, East+West). The study analyzes and explores the possible cost impact and energy conversion efficiency impact of converter settings and PV panel connection schemes that may lead to cost fluctuations on domestic PV systems based on MPPT-controlled DC-DC converters, and the study fills a research gap in the testing of multi-orientation domestic rooftop PV systems using UK data.
