Abstract

Remanufacture has been defined to be the process of returning a used product to at least OEM original performance specification from the customers’ perspective and giving the resultant product a warranty that is at least equal to that of a newly manufactured equivalent. In the context of the oil and gas industry, this can involve the remanufacture of equipment such as drilling rigs, pipelines, and offshore platforms. As the demand for oil and gas continues to rise and the environmental impacts of their extraction and use become more apparent, the need for sustainable solutions to these challenges has become pressing. One such solution is the application of circular economy principles to the oil and gas industry, with a focus on remanufacture as a key tool for achieving this goal. The use of remanufacture in the oil and gas industry offers several benefits, both from an environmental and economic standpoint. From an environmental perspective, remanufacture can reduce the amount of waste generated by the oil and gas industry. This is because remanufacture allows for the reuse of materials and components that would otherwise be discarded as waste. This can help to reduce the environmental impacts associated with waste disposal, such as air and water pollution and the depletion of natural resources. While from an economic standpoint, remanufacture can help to improve the competitiveness of the oil and gas industry. This is because remanufacturing can reduce the costs associated with the procurement of new equipment, as it allows for the repair and restoration of existing equipment rather than the purchase of new equipment. Despite these benefits, the implementation of remanufacture in the oil and gas industry is not without challenges. One of the key challenges is the lack of awareness and understanding of the potential of remanufacture among industry stakeholders. Another challenge is the availability of used or end-of-life products for remanufacture. In some cases, the oil and gas industry may not have access to a sufficient quantity of used or end-of-life products to support remanufacture processes. This can limit the scope and scale of remanufacture in the industry, reducing its potential benefits. Despite these challenges, the use of remanufacture as a tool for implementing circular economy principles in the oil and gas industry is a promising approach. This paper focuses on reporting the current applications of remanufacture in the oil and gas industry to identify the components within the industry that can be integrated within a circular economy framework.
