Abstract

The initial stages of an automated inspection protocol and decision making algorithm for cylinder head remanufacture are presented. Grayscale images of cylinder heads are subjected to a LabView based image processing algorithm, which includes averaging, equalising and filtering. The transformed images are subject to further interrogation with core defects being identified via a bespoke MATLAB programme. Various defect parameters such as area, perimeter, length, height, circularity, eccentricity and location are determined using the inspection algorithm. The interrogation algorithm also acknowledges known areas of non-defect. The inspection protocol also offers versatility in that surface defects can be classed as individual defects in isolation of other defects or as part constituents of larger defects (i.e. groups of individual defects representing a single larger defect). Given the defect parameters determined by the inspection protocol, the system also has the ability to form automated decisions on whether to conduct remanufacturing operations and thus offering improved repeatability and reliability over manual inspection. Other advantages include a reduction in over reliance and the ability of the system to form a part basis of an in house inspection training protocol for remanufactures in addition to a quick way of quantitatively determining both location and size of defects. The inspection protocol is currently only applicable for known cylinder heads and on the surface containing the piston holes. With the aim of developing a fully autonomous system, this work further identifies areas for future research.
