Abstract

General expressions for two conjugated thermodynamic potentials of the ferroelectric nematic phase, which are defined at fixed applied voltage and fixed external charges, respectively, have been derived in the general case of inhomogeneous polarisation and inhomogeneous electric field. In particular it has been shown that the free energy defined at fixed applied voltage contains the nontrivial term which is determined by long range dipole-dipole interactions. This term vanishes in the simple case of the homogeneous polarisation profile. The derived expression for the free energy has been used to describe the distribution of the polarisation and the electric field in the ferroelectric nematic cell with two dielectric alignment layers.
