Abstract

This exploratory study examines hospitality management education in Business Schools in Scotland, focusing on how subjects, knowledge, and pedagogies have evolved within business and management degrees in hospitality. Using the concepts of discipline and post-discipline, the research investigates the intellectual, social, and organizational dimensions of hospitality knowledge. Qualitative case studies were employed, incorporating semi-structured interviews with thirteen academics across four Scottish universities, alongside the researcher’s field notes and diaries. Evidently, Mode 1 knowledge production remains dominant, positioning hospitality as a sub-discipline of management through interdisciplinary integration. However, there is a growing shift toward Mode 2 knowledge production, emphasizing extra-disciplinary knowledge for practicality. This shift signals a broader transition to post-discipline, enabling hospitality academics to navigate the complexities of knowledge production influenced by institutional strategies, credit and ranking systems, and market demands.
