Abstract

In this study, we propose a remote stress criterion for brittle fracture within the framework of peridynamics. The concept of bond stress is linked to the classical notion of local stress. An analytical and numerical investigation of bond stress near the crack tip is conducted using Sneddon-Williams asymptotic solutions for tensile opening (Mode I). Subsequently, we introduce a linearized structural-temporal fracture criterion, enabling the formulation of a remote stress fracture criterion. This criterion is derived for 2D and 3D scenarios and accommodates both uniform and non-uniform discretizations. Its validity is demonstrated through numerical verification tests. The proposed remote stress approach introduces, for the first time, a bond failure criterion directly based on the critical stress intensity factor.
