Abstract

Virtual Reality (VR) tools provide an immersive environment where users interact with realistic object representations. In the maritime industry, VR serves as a platform for developing crew training and survey planning applications, among others. These applications facilitate quicker deployment of seafarers by reducing the need for physical onboard presence to learn ship layouts and emergency routes. They also enhance inspection capabilities for monitoring structural deficiencies and offer valuable input for retrofitting purposes. This is particularly crucial in vessels with complex designs, such as passenger ships. A cost-effective implementation method involves capturing panoramic (360°) images or videos that VR applications can utilize. A practical application of the developed framework for inspection planning and training is demonstrated through a case study with-in the EU/UK funded Green Marine project. This project aids both technical and non-technical personnel in familiarizing themselves with a ship's layout, specifically one used to install and test a carbon capture system.
