Abstract

Purpose This study aims to investigate the information behavior (IB) of Imams in Kuwaiti mosques, specifically the information sources and technologies they use, the information sources available to them and the challenges they face. Design/methodology/approach An online questionnaire was created using Microsoft Form and distributed to the sample to collect qualitative and quantitative data (mixed method). Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive analysis, whereas qualitative responses were analyzed and presented using thematic analysis. The sample comprised 119 Sunni and Shia imams. Findings The results revealed that the main resources for both groups of Imams were personal libraries, followed by the internet, specifically e-libraries and websites. The most used devices in mosques were mobile devices, iPads, laptops and data devices. The main communication channels were WhatsApp, phone calls, Instagram and the X platform. Arabic, English and Persian were the primary search languages used. The challenges faced by Imams were categorized into four main categories: lack of communication, lack of devices, need for workshops and need for information resources. Practical implications The outcomes and recommendations are expected to be highly significant for the Kuwait Ministry of Awqaf in assessing its facilities and services for Imams and mosques. Originality/value This study provides valuable insights into imams’ IBs in Kuwait and are expected to be significant in assessing and evaluating their ability to adapt to the latest information sources and technologies.
