Abstract

Statins are regarded as a key drug therapy in secondary prevention following acute coronary syndrome (ACS). It is essential this patient group is treated with an optimal statin therapy to prevent subsequent events and associated morbidity and mortality. Publication of new NICE guidance in 2014 put atorvastatin 80 mg as the statin of choice in our health board. However, prescribed statin therapy still varies. NICE recommends measurement of cholesterol levels within three months of high-intensity statin initiation, during which a minimum nonhigh- density lipoprotein (nonHDL) reduction of 40% should be achieved.
