Abstract
This report provides an evidence-informed profile for the role of a Virtual School Head Teacher (VSHT) in Scotland. Developed collaboratively by the Virtual School Head Teachers Network in Scotland, CELCIS, and colleagues from across the UK, the profile aims to promote consistency of practice and experience for the education of care experienced children and young people. The VSHT is a senior member of education staff working at a strategic level to improve educational experiences and outcomes for care experienced learners. The role’s reach goes beyond academic learning, impacting children’s rights, wellbeing, and stability by working with those who live with, teach, and support care experienced children and young people. The Virtual School model describes the organisational framework for the group of children for whom the Head Teacher is responsible, as if they attended a single school. The profile, alongside a sample job description and advert, is intended as a guiding framework to ensure consistency in access to high-quality, needs-led education and support for care experienced learners. It supports Scotland’s commitment to The Promise and the incorporation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into Scots law.
