Abstract
This article explores Scottish investments in European nationalist causes through the lens of popular verse, largely published in the newspaper press. It argues that this verse is indicative of a wider perception that Scotland had different and greater investments in European nineteenth-century nationalism than the rest of Britain. The article examines poetry centred on Louis (Lajos) Kossuth and Hungary, and Giuseppe Garibaldi of Italy, as the two most frequently represented and discussed figures in relation to perceived battles for national liberation in Europe.
