This chapter examines the causes of external and internal corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in onshore gas and hazardous liquid gathering and transmission pipelines. Based on an analysis of the cause of corrosion, it is then shown how risk-based inspection and maintenance strategies are used in the pipeline industry to identify, manage, and control pipeline corrosion.
