This research examines how participative leadership – sharing problem solving with subordinates before making decisions – relates to follower creativity through developing follower trust (in leader). We investigated whether cognitive trust (followers’ evaluation of leaders’ personal characteristics, e.g., integrity, competence, reliability and dependability) and affective trust (followers’ felt emotional ties arising from leaders’ exhibition of care and concern about them) play markedly different roles in the relationship between participative leadership and follower creativity. We found that affective trust acts as a mediator of the positive relationship between participative leadership and follower creativity; while cognitive trust negatively moderates such a positive relationship. Specifically, we found that the mediating effect of affective trust in the relationship between participative leadership and follower creativity is weaker when followers have a higher level of cognitive trust. We conclude the paper with the theoretical and practical implications of this study.
