Abstract
This paper offers a preliminary exploration of the sets of ideas and images which cohere around these two notions of wilderness and sophistication. It considers the ways in which they are constructed as opposites in Canadian writing, and suggests that, within the literary structures of pastoral, they may interpenetrate.
