Abstract

The Leveson report of November 2012 was a landmark in reshaping press regulation in the UK. One of the central fears expressed during its evidence gathering was the potential for the so-called 'Chilling Effect' upon serious investigative journalism. This chapter looks at the historical example of Watergate and the subsequent variables contributing to the chilling effect after this high point in the genre. Drawing on McNair's thesis 'Cultural Chaos' the chapter analysis whether anyone can accurately project the impact of Leveson?
