Abstract

A competency-based continuing professional development (CPD) workbook for pharmacists developing their practice in the pharmaceutical care of diabetes mellitus (type 2) was designed to be chosen as one method of CPD support offered to 24 community pharmacists during a 12-month study. The workbook comprises five competency clusters (comprising 54 competencies and 47 behavioral statements) which defined the pharmacist as: (1) functioning in a multidisciplinary team member, (2) understanding tests, assessments, and associated devices, (3) understanding diagnosis and therapeutic interventions, (4) demonstrating conformance to standards/guidelines (local and national),and (5)contributing to the continuing education of the patient and family/carers. This research aimed to monitor pharmacists' records of responses to competency clusters, representing targeting of their own CPD needs.
