Abstract

This article is about why the state of affairs exists where Saussure has become a ‘prophet without honour’ in linguistics but a father-figure in literary and cultural studies. My argument is basically that Saussure’s linguistics is not appropriate to the study of language, though as a methodology it might be adopted in other areas.
