Abstract

A biography of Johnston, James (1655–1737), politician and government official, was born on 9 September 1655, the younger son of Sir Archibald Johnston, Lord Wariston (bap. 1611, d. 1663), and his second wife, Helen, daughter of Alexander Hay, Lord Fosterseat. Following the execution of his father by the Restoration regime in Scotland, Johnston and his family went to the Netherlands. Later he studied civil law, having ‘the character of the greatest proficient in the university of Utrecht’ (Carstares State Papers, 92), and after the completion of his studies went to Italy.
