Abstract

A biography of Hume, Patrick, first earl of Marchmont (1641–1724), politician, was born at Redbraes, Berwickshire, on 13 January 1641, the eldest son of Sir Patrick Hume of Polwarth, first baronet (d. 1648), and Christian (d. 1688), youngest daughter of Sir Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick and Ballencrief. Sir Patrick Hume of Polwarth (c.1550–1609) was his grandfather.
