Abstract

Fretting fatigue causes a great deal of trouble in service. Fretting, a form of surface damage, can occur when clamped parts move slightly relative to each other under cyclic loading. It sometimes leads to the initiation and growth of fatigue cracks. The whole process is then known as fretting fatigue; mechanisms are understood in broad outline, but detail is complicated.
