Abstract

The synthesis of a three-dimensional interlocked molecular architecture (a rotaxane) from a two-dimensional square-planar metal template (see scheme) has been achieved. A combination of steric and electronic factors direct the synthesis in the third dimension, either by promoting or preventing interlocking.
