This paper presents a review of current risk-based design as applied to passenger ship safety and highlights future developments. Emphasis is placed on demonstrating the considerable potential offered to the marine industry by embracing innovation, in terms of routine utilization in the ship design process of scientific and technological breakthroughs, to contain risk.
