Abstract

I am a Scottish prison sociologist. During the 13 years I have been studying the Russian prison system, first set foot on the territory of the Russian correctional institution in 1998. Since then, I have been able to collect data on the 18 prisons in various parts of Russia. In this article, I have tried to bring the main results of my research on the Russian prison labor. The conclusions to which I came, no way to characterize the entire penal system as a whole. However, they present us with a much broader question about the historical continuity of the practices, which at the time it was vital not only for the infrastructure proper places of detention, but for the whole of Soviet society. In addition, the research project, in which I worked, was connected with the problem of prison management in those days, when the country, which was recently compared with the huge kartserom1, there were violent and quite dramatic changes. In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to the Russian audience and show the difficulties and pitfalls encountered and how much pressure is necessary to test a man who, while remaining in the "Western" positions, decided to do research in Russia and trace the history of the prison system to the present day.
