Control system designers face increasing difficult challenges nowadays as the size of wind turbine continues to increase. The decreasing frequency of the fore-aft structural mode of the tower and its associated right half plane zero being a key reason which makes controller design so difficult. The need for an integrated design strategy incorporating both controller and turbine design is emphasized to help mitigate many of the problems encountered in controller design. The need for more advanced control techniques in order to achieve better performance characteristics is emphasized.
