Abstract

Exposure of coal tar samples to a derivatisation procedure prior to Accelerated Solvent Extraction with hexane yields a considerable number of hydroxyl-aromatic and amino-aromatic compounds alongside the normal aromatics and alkanes as studied by GCxGC TOFMS. This method defines a straightforward three-step routine of derivatisation, extraction and analysis. Using a 'reverse-phase' column set for GCxGC, phenolic and pyrrolic species are observed in the chromatographs with their alkylated homologues. This mass of information can be used to determine the properties and history of the coal tar sample. Coal source, manufactured gas plant process type, post-formation fractionation and exposure to weathering have all been observed from the analysis of the compounds present in the chromatographs.
