Abstract

Examines how the distinction between two definitions of a Scottish crofting identity, a person who fulfils the role of a crofter and a crofter community which may include persons who do not fulfil this role, is manifested in tensions among the stakeholders of crofting policy as evidenced by interviews with persons representing main stakeholder organisations. Outlines the legislative framework applicable to crofting. Summarises the respondents' views on the significance of crofting as a functional activity and the existence of a common crofting identity.
