Biography of Murray, John, first duke of Atholl (1660–1724), army officer and politician, was the eldest son of John Murray, first marquess of Atholl (1631–1703), and Lady Amelia Sophia Stanley (1633–1703), fourth daughter of James Stanley, seventh earl of Derby.
